Did we mention how looks appear and disappear and come again

Prom styles appear and disappear, and are available again. Although 2020 is going to be remembered because of the year from the canceled prom, a glance back at the history of prom styles over the decades provides a chuckle diversion from disappointment.

High school and college prom dresses happen to be a thing since a minimum of the 30s. That is the first decade that there is substantial photographic documentation of formal school dances, to ensure that is where we’ll begin our survey of styles, hemlines, waistlines, shoulder styles, and necklines.

1930S MOVIE PALACE PROM

In the ’30s, ladies opted for slinky styles and sumptuous fabrics. Possibly relying on movie star looks (problem?), strapless or shimmering dresses with shoulders demurely included in beaded cardigans or velvet gowns with dropped waists may be seen around the dance floor or perhaps in the receiving line. Yes, receiving line. At a prom.

1940S WARTIME DRESSES

Wartime shortages meant fabric is in tight supply, so prom dresses tended to help keep to narrow silhouettes. Oddly, enough fabric was discovered for sleeves and covered bodices. Modest glamour was the order from the day, and ladies got creative to create with limited supplies.

THE 1950S FIT AND FLARE

Did we mention how looks appear and disappear and come again? The 1950s were the heyday of the fit-and-flare look, which actually started using Dior’s postwar “New Look” celebrating the (perceived) end of material shortages with huge flared skirts beneath fitted, covered-up bodices supported with crinolines. In the ’50s, the fit-and-flare look found variants with ruffles and tiers (did someone say tiers? See this season’s designs) or sashes accenting cinched waists. Bodices might have bared the shoulders, but ladies covered them up again with shawls or sweaters. Waltz- and tea-length dresses predominated.

1960S BUBBLES AND BOUFFANTS

In the late ’50s, the “flare” a part of fit and flare took on a more rounded shape, and also the “bubble hem” dress was created. In the first ’60s, the number of skirts now use hair. How many hours of teasing and just how many pounds of a wig made it happen to take to create those bouffant and beehive hairdos? Waistlines started to migrate up to the late years of the decade once the empire's waist is at full force. While the sheath was built with a moment within the ’60s, the empire style having a modest bodice won the decade.

1970S FLOWER CHILDREN, PEASANTS, AND—YIKES!—CARRIE!

Much as we’d prefer to forget, the ’70s happened. Nothing says “frump” that can compare with an eyelet lace peasant dress, a synthetic polka-dot frock that appears like your granny’s nightgown. “Hippie” prom-goers wore flowers behind their ears. The baby-doll was built with a nanosecond when Twiggy turned up, but seriously, a micro-mini and thigh-highs in a dance? When the only reasonably stylish prom gown from the decade was worn by Carrie White, before the pig’s blood fell and she or he unleashed hell, you knew you had been living an extended fashion nightmare.

IN THE 1980S ARE MORE RUFFLES! BIGGER HAIR!

Molly Ringwald did her better to redeem polka dots in pink, and everyone else attempted to forget Carrie under mountains of ruffles and big hair. We have Madonna and Cyndi Lauper by way of thanking for the return of tulle with greater volume compared to demure treatments from the ’50s. Madonna devotees also brought back the short pouf, and lots of it, to complement that big, crimped hair. Working girls started to wear shoulder pads, perhaps like a power play throughout a breakout decade for professional women.

1990S LINEBACKER PROM

OK, enough using the shoulder pads already. When prom-goers finally got within the linebacker look, they couldn’t appear to figure out what related to their shoulders whatsoever, so off-the-shoulder styles arrived and spaghetti straps returned. Then halter styles, then strapless again. What the heck happening here?

2000S SLINKY, SHINY, AND SUBSTANTIAL

Satin dresses took over within the early 2000s, and decorative touches like floral appliqués, bows, and sashes disappeared. Then the lower half of the bodice also disappeared using the advent from the two-piece prom dress. Young women who desired to observe the trend without baring their bellies chose a longer, but nonetheless separate bodice. There appeared to be a reaction to reduction within the late years from the aughts, with candy-colored princess dresses exploding from limos in clouds of tulle (tulle again!). Don’t do this unless you wish to look much like your fairy godmother turned you right into a giant pink or yellow Peep.

2010S SUSTAINABLE, RETRO, AND RECYCLED

By now we’re obtaining a little seasick riding that swinging pendulum of prom styles, but maybe it had been the giant princess gowns that directed some ladies back to their mother’s closets. Gowns in the past demonstrated a devotion to sustainability as movie stars and prom-goers alike proved that wearing vintage, repeatedly, is really a value, and classic gowns support the passage of time all right.

THE 2020S WHAT WE WOULD HAVE WORN AND WILL WEAR AGAIN

Cancelations can’t quell creativity, an internet-based purple prom dress still demand fabulous gowns. We covered this season’s trends inside a separate post on evening dress trends that discussed tiers, ruffles, polka dots, and—whoa, crochet? Yes, as the ’70s had their eyelet lace, the ’20s get their crochet. Metallics and ombré colors came on strong this season as well.
